Ken Sandell
Project Executive brings extensive construction surveying and reality capture experience to growing firm
Original Survey Solutions (OSS) has expanded into Southern California with the hiring of Project Executive Ken Sandell.
Sandell brings more than a decade of experience in surveying and construction, most recently serving as Survey Manager for Hoffman Construction’s Layout & Modeling division. His background includes construction surveying, reality capture, scanning, monitoring and modeling for complex construction projects.
“A lot of us have worked alongside Ken before, so we know what he can do and how diligently he approaches the work,” says OSS President and CEO Will Paul. “Ken has strong technical abilities and construction experience, but what really impresses me is how he brings practical solutions to complex situations. He’s based in San Diego, so we get the dual benefit of a tremendously talented professional along with an expanded presence in Southern California.”
Paul and Sandell first developed a relationship while working on the same construction project, where OSS helped support the project team’s scanning efforts and provided several other services. That professional relationship grew over time and eventually led to Sandell joining OSS.
Sandell is already playing a key role on one of OSS’s most technically demanding assignments, providing surveying and construction support services for the UCSF Health Helen Diller Hospital at Parnassus Heights in San Francisco.
His experience across both surveying and construction provides a unique perspective that helps him understand not only how to capture and analyze information, but how project teams need to use it in the field.
“Complex projects can have a lot of moving pieces, and sometimes the simplest solutions are the best,” Sandell said. “You have to understand what the team needs, find a way to deliver it and be ready to respond when something critical has to be turned around quickly. I’ve seen that same approach working with the OSS team, and it’s one of the things that attracted me to the company.”
Sandell began his career as a surveyor with Westlake Consultants in the Portland, Oregon, area. He then spent four years with Konell Construction, working in project management, estimating and construction safety. He joined a subsidiary of Hoffman Construction in 2018 and ultimately served as Survey Manager for Hoffman Layout & Modeling.
The addition of Sandell marks another step in OSS’s expansion since its founding less than three years ago. The firm has grown to more than 50 employees while building a portfolio of major technology, healthcare, commercial and infrastructure projects throughout California and the western United States.
